Bobbi Coats Takes a Team to the
Northeast J/YR Championships

On August 18, 2001, four of my barn friends from the B & B Equestrian Center, Bradie Morgott, Erin Mahoney, Haley Houde-Walter, and I departed for the Northeast Junior/Young Riders Championships in Darien, Connecticut. It was like a page out of the Olympics! The Championships were developed three years ago by Olympian Lendon Gray to promote dressage in young riders. Each championship division is made up of three classes, a written test, a dressage test, and an equitation class. The three count equally toward a total score. The competitor with the highest score wins the divisional championship. In addition, there were special divisions such as the Prix Caprilli, a dressage test with jumps, and a lead line competition for riders under 4 years old.

It was exciting to see the competitors from all over the United States, Lithuania, Mexico, and South Africa. Riders were friendly, talented, and all loved their horses. We had opportunities to be schooled by roving trainers such as Jennifer Baumert, Courtney King, and Tom Noone. Some of us were even judged in our dressage test by Robert Dover! During the weekend-long competition, riders were required to volunteer two hours of their time to make the competition a success. Volunteering included such things as being runners, moving chairs around, and speaking with Olympians about their experiences. Competitors and spectators were entertained throughout the weekend, including a speech by Lendon Gray for spectators on what they should look for at each level of dressage training. It was interesting and made me proud to be around so many young riders with such an interest in dressage!

Under the direction of our trainer/instructor, Bobbi Coats, and the watchful eye of our groom, Elizabeth Collins, we all left feeling proud of our performances and eager to try again next year.
